Harry Wins The Wightlink Ryde Chess Rapid

Local player Harry Vernon, once again takes home the silverware, defeating some strong local and visiting opposition to win the Wightlink Ryde Rapid.

The event was held at the Ryde Rowing Club on June 16th. The first formal chess event we have held here and it was lovely to be so close to the beach and we had great weather for it.

The room watches a tense 6th round finish between two players attempting to make the podium

Harry is proving to be the man to beat on the Island and may need to consider reinforcing his trophy shelf.

Final Table:

The format was x6 rounds of 15+10. Which is a middle time frame for chess, and called Rapid. The games last around 20 to 45 minutes. It's a challenging day over 6 rounds and it was great to see new player Tomas Leistrum put in such a strong performance on his competitive debut. Adding another name to the growing strength of IOW chess.

Player performance ratings:

Leistrum tied for 2nd place with the very strong David Collyer, an islander/ Southampton University player who was the highest rated classical player at the event.

The best under 16 price went to visiting player Theo Horne, it was great to see a few local Hampshire players travel over for the event. Grace Stevens won the prize for best Women's player putting a solid performance. David Williams picked up best over 65.
