The Isle of Wight International Chess Tournament: Feb 18-23 2025

The Island will host elite chess players from across the globe in a 6 day, 9 round tournament next February. Taking place at the Ryde School over half term, the event aims to attract a large number of top level players and several Grandmasters.

For full details and sign up:

The tournament will attract over 400 players to the Island out of season and is supported by Wightlink Ferries once again, and additionally this time by Visit IOW. We wouldn't be able to hold such a large event so soon without this vital support. Support also comes from the government backed scheme to promote UK elite chess through the English Chess Federation. Chess and Bridge are providing additional equipment and prizes and will have a shop available on site throughout the event.

The International Open currently has x6 Grandmasters confirmed with more expected to announce in the coming weeks. This will be a norms event allowing title seekers to play at the top level and will establish the IOW as a new UK destination for elite chess.

The "Holiday" U2000 will see a mixed field competing over 7 rounds Tues - Fri.  This is not a norms event but is a fantastic opportunity for junior and casual players to gain experience playing in a longer competition over the February half term break. This event allows for x2 half point byes, so it's also a great event for players who want to see more of the Island.

The event culminates in a weekend Congress, with games timed to end before the final rounds of the Open, allowing players to watch the top tables in a 250 seat theatre in the Ryde School performing arts centre.

The event welcomes junior players. There's a viewing platform overlooking the main playing area and a café where parents can wait. One parent must remain within the school grounds at all times. We will be announcing activities for parents and supporters too, such as casual tournaments and chess workshops.

International Arbiter, Shohreh Bayat once again is in charge and we will be live broadcasting the International Open on chess.com

Currently there are around 80 of 100 early bird 20% off tickets left.
